O

O is a symbol proposed by the English psychoanalyst Wilfred R. Bion as a concept indicating the fundamental fact that “there does exist unknowable and unreachable ultimate truths,” regardless of whether it be mental or physical, verbal or non-verbal.
Hayashi’s practice is based on the act of communing with the original nature of the world through the medium of photography. It may seem extremely inconvenient to work with photography, which is based on reproducing things in front of the viewer, rather than choosing abstract painting, poetry, and other methods more suited to communicating with unknown concepts. Still, for Hayashi, this inconvenience is important. In this work, there are a series of cuts that are elusive and of unknown use: views blurred by reflections on glass and water, objects that are completely out of focus and have become patterns of light, and events that have blended so deeply into the darkness that they can no longer be discerned. These images are somewhat floating, removed from any existing meaning. However, as the viewer repeatedly moves through this collection of photographs, he or she will find in them a strong will, which Hayashi describes as ‘certain uncertainty’. Through his photographs, Hayashi seeks to shake up, expand, and redefine the way we perceive reality.

Scenery to be glimpsed only at the boundary between things and theōria. What would that be?
